About Our Phone Apps and Capabilities
Every social media site needs to work well on phones, whether Android or iPhone. This is made possible through responsive website design, where elements resize and menus adapt to fit smaller screens, and mobile ad spots appear as desktop ones disappear. As a web developer, you often find yourself resizing your browser on a PC to view the mobile layout and compare it with the desktop version. That’s just how it’s done. You can do the same here using your PC browser, and compare views to see how Mynet looks on Phone.
In recent years, modern technology has introduced something called Progressive Web Technology, which transforms a website or network like ours into an online app by leveraging its responsive capabilities. Both phone and PC browsers can prompt us to install the site as an app, giving us instant access to it just like a native application.
An app made from Progressive Web Technology is referred to as a progressive web app or PWA.
The great thing about this is that it reduces the cost of developing phone apps. If you’re using Microsoft Edge on your PC, or another browser with PWA capability, you can install nearly any website as an app on your computer, organize all your apps in a folder, and easily find the site you need.
On top of the cost of developing a phone app, developers often want to host it on their own servers and charge a hefty fee for it or sell the app to you for another steep price, like $5000. Thankfully, we don’t have to deal with that anymore. These expenses can be pretty overwhelming for someone starting a new business or venture. And you know how it is, everything you need for creating things and for working online doing business cost something. Furthermore, the cost of an app would be more than it cost to host Mynet on an enterprise server platform. And way more in fact.
Well, our site has a PWA installed into it, via certain scripts that instruct browsers about the PWA and how to render it.
Setting up a few PWA web files on a site like ours is pretty simple, especially with the instructions provided for installing the site as an app. This is particularly useful for turning the site into a phone app. The PWA development team can review these files, offer suggestions for improvements, and even recommend new features. Once done, the process generates both Android and iPhone app versions ready for the app stores. This means we can easily convert our PWA site into native apps—and the best part is, the service is free thanks to the PWA team.
Another good thing is that your phone app is hosted at your site instead of elsewhere. And any improvements on the app are actually improvements made to the site. Which means that you never have to redesign or update the app, unless you want to update its icon.
At the moment you can install Mynet as an app, however we still have to get around to customizing the files for this, and upload our app icons, and then have it all converted into official Android and iPhone native phone apps for the stores. Furthermore, we will make them both available for download and installation from here at Mynet.
Needless to say, the developer here is pretty thankful for the PWA phone apps coming along about now, since this means one cost has been removed from the startup cost equation. And when we are open for business, we will have both the Android and iPhone native apps available for installation here, and at the phone stores.
